Horse training with Lunge head collar
During 30 years of
riding there have been things about certain horse products that have hurt us,
so we have now designed our own product range and have it manufactured for us.
The Lunge head collar
for horses is a horse training collar that is designed similar to a halter for
a dog. It is a good alternative to using some of the older, training tools that may deliver some pain as an aid in
training such as pinch collar, Woodhouse collar or an electronic collar. I have
been using one both young horses and I can honestly say it works.
The Lunge headcollar is made by some different makers and all have
their difference on the design but all work in a similar way. The collar goes
over the horse's nose with a loop and hooks behind the horse's head on the top
of the neck behind the ears. The loop hangs loose, threads through an o-ring
and the lead hooks into the end of the loop.
The gadget works like
this; the horse starts to lunge forward, as they do the loop tightens around
the nose and pulls the horse's head to the side. This accomplishes two things;
it breaks the horse's attention to lunging and it makes the horse look around
at the handler.
Your horse will likely not like having the bend around their
nose. Using some treats and short periods of loose wearing that are gradually
increased in time will ease the transition and make things a little easier for
both of you. I have seen older horses walking fine with these as if it is
second nature. Be accordant and persistent and you will be rewarded by control
over your horse.
The head collar like any other training device is exactly
that; a "training" collar. Your ultimate goal is still to get your
horse to where they are walking properly on a leash without a head collar.
Trade sessions with the head collar with sessions without the head collar
assures that you are not getting a certain behavior just because the training
device is being used.
